This lesson involved a lot of preparation time. Thankfully we had a sunny day and the ground wasn't too wet, but I spent my lunch time marking off the squares and another hour modeling the Squares Handout in order for students to immediately begin sketching outside.
During my modeling, I instructed students on how to collect data from their particular square. I explained what things they should write down (living and non-living) and what things they should leave out. The video quiz on living and non-living objects was a great tool before students went outside, and engaged students in a wonderful discussion with their partner.
